Westcliffe is located in the Wet Mountain Valley of Colorado at the junction of State Highways 69 and 96. The town is bordered by the Wet Mountains to the east and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range to the west. The town's elevation is 7,800 feet. Main routes into the area are State Highways 69 & 96, and U.S. Hwy 50. Nearest commercial airports are Denver International, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. Westcliffe was founded by German immigrants in 1881 as an agricultural colony and later became the railroad center for the valley. Nearby Silver Cliff was a dominant mining town during Colorado's silver boom of the 1800's. The historic towns of Westcliffe and nearby Silver Cliff provide easy access to recreation in the southern potion of the San Isabel National Forest including the Wet Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Custer County Chamber of Commerce: Serves the towns of Westcliffe, Silver Cliff and surrounding area. They are an excellent source for information regarding the community and will provide assistance in planning your visit to the area.
