Leadville, Colorado
Horseback Riding Trails

Leadville is located near the junction of U.S. Hwy 24 & State Hwy 91 at an elevation of 10,430 feet. The trails near Leadville, Colorado are located in the Leadville Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest. The town is minutes from the national forest trailheads and is a major supply point for those riding in the region. Many trails in the Leadville area are above 10,000 feet and travel through the scenic alpine terrain of the Sawatch Mountain Range. Several trails include the Continental Divide and portions of the scenic Collegiate Peaks, Mt. Massive and Holy Cross Wilderness Areas. Riders will enjoy the high alpine terrain, wildlife, and beautiful mountain lakes found in this region of the Central Rockies. Trails range in elevation from 8,400 feet to over 11,000 feet.

Trail Location Description
Birdseye Gulch Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District This is a difficult ride through Leadville's historic mining district and some beautiful views if you chance to look around. The route down is steep and rocky with a bog you won't forget.
Black Cloud Trail Leadville Ranger District Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft elevation is the highest point in Colorado. It is the second highest mountain in the adjacent 48 states.
Chalk Mountain Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District Chalk Mountain Road leads users through old growth spruce/fir forest and alpine meadows.
Clear Creek Road Leadville Ranger District Clear Creek Road is passable by most two-wheel drive vehicles. Many recreation opportunities are accessible from this road including hiking, fishing, viewing scenery, touring historic sites, mountain biking and four-wheel driving.
Colorado Trail (Tennessee Pass to Turquoise Lake)  Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail leads users through lodgepole, spruce-fir and aspen forests. It consists of moderately difficult terrain.
Colorado Trail (Turquoise Lake to Halfmoon Creek)  Leadville Ranger District This section of the Colorado Trail is known as #10. It begins west of Turquoise Lake and ends 11.5 miles later in the Halfmoon Creek drainage.
Colorado Trail-clear Creek Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail leads from Twin Lakes Reservoir to Clear Creek Road. It is a popular segment that is used by many runners training for the long-distance foot race the Leadville 100.
Colorado Trail (Midland-hagerman Pass)  Leadville Ranger District This is a moderately easy loop in the Hagerman Pass area. This is a great ride for those with an interest in railroad and western history.
Colorado Trail (Halfmoon to Twin Lakes) Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail begins in the Halfmoon Drainage and continues for approximately 6 miles to the Lakeview Campground above Twin Lakes.
Echo Canyon Trail Leadville Ranger District This is a short but steep trail. Excellent opportunities for viewing high alpine scenery and wildlife.
Flume Creek Road Leadville Ranger District This road near Twin Lakes provides access to the backcountry for various uses. Because it is not within a wilderness area boundary, motorized vehicles may be operated on Flume Creek Road to the gate closure.
