Horseback Riding Trails

Buena Vista is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 24 & 285 in the heart of Colorado's Central Rocky Mountains at an elevation of  7,954 feet. It's geographic location offers easy access to trail systems in both the Leadville and Salida Ranger Districts of the San Isabel National Forest. The town is minutes from national forest trailheads and is a major supply point for those riding in the region. Nearby trails in the Collegiate Peaks and Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Areas travel through the Sawatch Mountain Range and provide access to the scenic Continental Divide and segments of the famous Colorado Trail system. Trails range in elevation from 7,320 to over 10,000 feet.

Angel Of Shavano Trailhead Salida Ranger District The Angel of Shavano Trailhead serves as an access point for segment 14 of the Colorado Trail, as well as access to the Mt. Shavano Trail.
Avalanche Trailhead Salida Ranger District Avalanche Trailhead is located 6 miles west of Buena Vista on Cottonwood Pass. It provides access to Segment 13 of the Colorado Trail that leads from North Cottonwood Creek to Chalk Creek.
Birdseye Gulch Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District This is a difficult ride through Leadville's historic mining district and some beautiful views if you chance to look around. The route down is steep and rocky with a bog you won't forget.
Black Cloud Trail Leadville Ranger District Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft elevation is the highest point in Colorado. It is the second highest mountain in the adjacent 48 states.
Browns Creek Trail Salida Ranger District Browns Creek Trail provides access to scenic views of Mt. Antero and the central Rocky Mountain highlands. Fishing for trout is accessible in Browns and Little Browns Creeks.
Browns Pass Trail Salida Ranger District Browns Pass Trail leads north, from Denny Trailhead on Cottonwood Pass, into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.
Bushnell Lakes Salida Ranger District Visitors gain access to Bushnell Lakes Trail via the Rainbow Trail and Hayden Creek Campground. The trail lies in the Sangre de Christo Wilderness Area.
Chalk Mountain Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District Chalk Mountain Road leads users through old growth spruce/fir forest and alpine meadows.
Clear Creek Road Leadville Ranger District Clear Creek Road is passable by most two-wheel drive vehicles. Many recreation opportunities are accessible from this road including hiking, fishing, viewing scenery, touring historic sites, mountain biking and four-wheel driving.
Colorado Trail (Tennessee Pass to Turquoise Lake)  Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail leads users through lodgepole, spruce-fir and aspen forests. It consists of moderately difficult terrain.
Colorado Trail (Turquoise Lake to Halfmoon Creek)  Leadville Ranger District This section of the Colorado Trail is known as #10. It begins west of Turquoise Lake and ends 11.5 miles later in the Halfmoon Creek drainage.
