Hiking Trails

Leadville is located near the junction of US 24 & Hwy 91 at an elevation of 10,430 feet. Hiking trails near Leadville, Colorado are located in the Leadville Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest. The town is minutes from national forest trailheads and is a major supply point for those hiking and backpacking in the region. Many trails in the Leadville area are above 10,000 feet and travel through scenic alpine terrain. Trails range in elevation from 8,400 feet to over 14,000 feet.

Black Cloud Trail Leadville Ranger District This trail is an alternative route to the more heavily used North and South Mount Elbert Trails for climbing Colorado's highest peak. Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft is the highest point in Colorado.
Buckeye Gulch Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District This is a short four-wheel drive road that can be hiked or biked as well. The road ends at Buckeye Trail which leads to Buckeye Lake.
Buckeye Trail Leadville Ranger District This short trail leads to Buckeye Lake. It gains 1,000' in approximately 2 miles.
Colorado Trail-Clear Creek Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail leads from Twin Lakes Reservoir to Clear Creek Road. It is used by many runners training for the long-distance foot race the Leadville 100.
Colorado Trail (Tennessee Pass to Turquoise Lake) Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail leads through lodgepole, spruce-fir and aspen forests. It consists of moderately difficult terrain.
Colorado Trail (Turquoise Lake to Halfmoon Creek) Leadville Ranger District This section of the Colorado Trail is known as #10. It begins west of Turquoise Lake and ends 11.5 miles later in the Halfmoon Creek drainage.
Colorado Trail (Midland to hagerman Pass) Leadville Ranger District This is a moderately easy loop in the Hagerman Pass area. This is a great walk for those with an interest in railroad and western history.
Colorado Trail (Halfmoon to Twin Lakes) Leadville Ranger District This segment of the Colorado Trail begins in the Halfmoon Drainage and continues for approximately 6 miles to the Lakeview Campground above Twin Lakes.
Echo Canyon Trail Leadville Ranger District   This is a short but steep trail. Opportunities for viewing high alpine scenery and wildlife.
