Four-Wheeling Trails

Leadville is located near the junction of U.S. 24 & State Hwy 91 at an elevation of 10,430 feet. The town is minutes from trailheads in the Leadville Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest and is a major supply point for those four-wheeling in the region.

Birdseye Gulch Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District This is a difficult ride through Leadville's historic mining district and some beautiful views if you chance to look around. The route down is steep and rocky with a bog you won't forget.
Buckeye Gulch Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District This is a short four-wheel drive road that can be hiked or biked as well. The road ends at Buckeye Trail which leads to Buckeye Lake.
Chalk Mountain Unimproved Road Leadville Ranger District Chalk Mountain Road leads users through old growth spruce/fir forest and alpine meadows.
Clear Creek Road Leadville Ranger District Clear Creek Road is passable by most two-wheel drive vehicles. Many recreation opportunities are accessible from this road including hiking, fishing, viewing scenery, touring historic sites, mountain biking and four-wheel driving.
Clohesy's Lake Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District This road is a fork from Clear Creek Road that leads to Clohesy's Lake with hiker access to Pear Lake. Clohesy's Lake Road is recommended for high clearance vehicles only as it is extremely rough.
Flume Creek Road Leadville Ranger District This road near Twin Lakes provides access to the backcountry for various uses. Because it is not within a wilderness area boundary, motorized vehicles may be operated on Flume Creek Road to the gate closure.
Hagerman Pass Leadville Ranger District Visitors traveling the entire Hagerman Pass Road from Turquoise Lake Road (Forest Road 105) to Fryingpan Lakes Road (State Highway 4) drive 22.5 miles.
Halfmoon Road Leadville Ranger District Halfmoon Road begins on Fish Hatchery Road (#300) and continue to the Champion Mine. The first 7 miles are accessible to 2WD vehicles.
Lost Canyon Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District The road winds through lodgepole stands and passes an abandoned placer mining operation on Lost Canyon Creek. It gets rough and rocky beyond a few miles, we recommend the use of a high clearance 4WD vehicle.
McNassar Gulch Leadville Ranger District McNassar Gulch Road (Forest Road 394) begins on South Fork Lake Creek Road 3.3 miles southwest of Highway 82. It ends after 1.5 miles at a gate to a private road.
North Fork Clear Creek Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District The ride is a gradual, bumpy climb into an open alpine valley with meadows, willows, wildlife and wildflower viewing.
Peakaboo Gulch Road Leadville Ranger District Peekaboo Gulch (Forest Road 393) is a 2.3 mile extension from the South Fork Lake Creek Road (Forest Road 391).
Sayers Gulch Road Leadville Ranger District Sayres Gulch (Forest Road 382) is 2.1 miles in length and begins at South Fork Lake Creek Road (Forest Road 391) 2.7 miles southwest of Highway 82.
South Fork Clear Creek Four-Wheel Drive Road Leadville Ranger District The South Fork of Clear Creek Road begins at Winfield and ends at the road closure just south of the Banker Mine. The road is extremely rough and recommended for high clearance vehicles only.
South Fork Lake Creek Road Leadville Ranger District South Fork Lake Creek (Forest Road 391) begins at Highway 82 about 8 miles west of Twin Lakes Village and ends at the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness boundary.
South Halfmoon Road Leadville Ranger District South Halfmoon Road is recommended for experienced four-wheel drivers only. It is very rough with a few stream crossings.
St. Kevin Road Leadville Ranger District St. Kevin Road can be used for many recreation opportunities. Four-wheel drivers, motorcyclists, mountain bikers and ATV riders can enjoy it during the summer months. Snowmobilers enjoy it during the winter.
